چکیده

Rotary echoes are employed to study excitation dynamics in manybody Rydberg systems. In this method, a phase reversal of a narrow-band excitation field is applied at a variable time during the excitation pulse. The visibility of the resulting echo signal reveals the degree of coherence of the excitation process. Rotary echoes are measured for several nD5/2 Rydberg levels of rubidium with principal quantum numbers near n = 43, where the strength of electrostatic Rydberg-atom interactions is modulated by a Förster resonance. The Rydberg-atom interactions are shown to diminish the echo visibility, in agreement with recent theoretical work. The equivalence of echo signals with spectroscopic data is demonstrated.

Simulations using echo sequences to observe coherence in a cold Rydberg gas

We simulate the effect of special excitation pulses on a cold gas of atoms. First, a rotary echo sequence is used to examine the coherent nature of a frozen Rydberg gas. If collective excitation and de-excitation is present with little or no source of dephasing, after these pulses the system should be returned to a state with few excitations, and a strong echo signal should occur. We investigat...

Trapping and coherent manipulation of a Rydberg atom on a microfabricated device: a proposal

We propose to apply atom-chip techniques to the trapping of a single atom in a circular Rydberg state. The small size of microfabricated structures will allow for trap geometries with microwave cut-off frequencies high enough to inhibit the spontaneous emission of the Rydberg atom, paving the way to complete control of both external and internal degrees of freedom over very long times. Trapping...

Coherent Excitation of Rydberg Atoms in Thermal Vapor Microcells

The coherent control of mesoscopic ensembles of atoms and Rydberg atom blockade are the basis for proposed quantum devices such as integrable gates and single photon sources. So far, experimental progress has been limited to complex experimental setups that use ultracold atoms. Here, we show that coherence times of ∼ 100 ns are achievable with coherent Rydberg atom spectroscopy in μm sized ther...

Observation of Rydberg blockade between two atoms

Blockade interactions whereby a single particle prevents the flow or excitation of other particles provide a mechanism for control of quantum states, including entanglement of two or more particles. Blockade has been observed for electrons1–3, photons4 and cold atoms5. Furthermore, dipolar interactions between highly excited atoms have been proposed as a mechanism for ‘Rydberg blockade’6,7, whi...

Excitation transport through Rydberg dressing

We show how to create long-range interactions between alkali atoms in different hyperfine ground states, with the goal of coherent quantum transport. The scheme uses off-resonant dressing with atomic Rydberg states. We demonstrate coherent migration of electronic excitation through dressed dipole–dipole interaction by full solutions of models with four essential states per atom and give the str...
